I visited the Hong Kong Jewellery Fair and, afterward, stopped by to see my friends at Blue Gems. For 30 years, we’ve bought gems from Mohammed Naseem, building a strong friendship despite meeting only once a year. Gem buying is about more than transactions; it’s about trust and connection. I arrived unannounced at their office on a Saturday as Mohammed and his son Shuja were about to leave, but they warmly welcomed me. Focal Industrial, where they’re located, is a surreal area filled with gemstone dealers and treasures from around the world. I immediately spotted a stunning 350 kg lot of Tanzanian rubies, trying to stay composed despite my excitement. While exploring their warehouse, I discovered three enormous tourmaline slices from Madagascar, part of a single 30 cm crystal, weighing 39,000, 42,000, and 32,500 carats. Alongside these, I secured a bag of vibrant rubelites and other gems. After selecting my finds, we sat down to negotiate. Their initial price left me speechless, but after some quiet reflection, they offered a new number I gladly accepted. A handshake sealed the deal, with payment promised later—a testament to the old-school trust in this business. Eleven years later, we carved a 44 cm falcon sculpture from that massive tourmaline—the largest ever carved to my knowledge.
